The light that healed: The true story of Mitchell May and the power of energy healing

A Remarkable Story that Foreshadowed the Path I was to Follow

This story was reported in Psychology Today and Yoga Journal, among other places. I saw a documentary about it many years ago when I was living in Florida. I had learned a little about energy and meditation before that, but this was my first time hearing about someone using energy hands-on to help someone heal, and I was deeply impressed and intrigued and wanted to learn more about what is possible.

In the summer of 1971 (the very same year and season that I was born), a young man named Mitchell May set out on a camping trip in the California desert with a group of friends. The trip was meant to be a simple adventure — an escape into nature, a journey to feel alive and free. As their van traveled down the road, Mitchell said a prayer that he would not waste his life and that he would realize the truth about life. Shortly after, his world changed.

Their vehicle had a head-on collision with another car. Mitchell was thrown from the vehicle, his body colliding with the earth with tremendous force. While the others escaped unharmed, his injuries were catastrophic. When rescuers arrived, they pronounced him dead. His consciousness had left his body. During that time, he met three beings in the spiritual realm who told him his mission on earth was not completed and he needed to go back.

A Body Broken, a Spirit Awakening

Mitchell’s vital signs returned and he was rushed to the hospital with severe internal injuries. His right leg had been shattered, broken in more than forty places, completely mangled. Bone fragments protruded through the skin. No flesh, only bone, remained in areas below his kneecap. Three inches of bone and nerve were missing from his leg. As he drifted in and out of a coma, he felt relentless agony, with lightning bolts of excruciating pain shooting through his body 24 hours a day — a type of nerve pain (Causalgia) that cannot be stopped with anesthesia.

Over time, Mitchell lost a great deal of weight, dropping to only 87 pounds. Despite the efforts of a team of 70 specialists, his leg became so badly infected that he and his family were told he would not survive without amputation. But he adamantly refused to allow it.

Mitchell’s mother eventually sought help outside the hospital walls — and found Jack Gray, a man quietly conducting research in energy healing and human consciousness at UCLA’s parapsychology department. Gray had been exploring the effects of subtle energy fields on human physiology, and he agreed to visit Mitchell in the hospital.

What happened next would change the course of Mitchell’s life — and challenge the limits of medical understanding.

The Daily Visits

When Jack Gray appeared in the hospital room, he didn’t bring instruments, medications, or surgical tools. He brought only his hands, his presence, and his intention. He looked at Mitchell with intense eyes and said, “Mitchell, you were created in the image and likeness of God. Therefore everything you need is already within you.” He sat beside the bed, closed his eyes, and began to channel healing energy into the injured leg. Mitchell felt a warmth — first subtle, then radiant — moving through his body. Each time, the pain would ease. His breathing would deepen. Sometimes he felt what seemed like light pulsing through his cells.

Jack Gray visited every day. He guided Mitchell into deep meditative states, where together they worked on releasing fear and calling in the body’s natural capacity to regenerate. Mitchell began to sense that his body was not merely a machine made of flesh and bone — it was a field of living energy, intimately connected to consciousness itself.

After 3 days of energy work, the pain was suddenly gone. As more days passed, his doctors were astonished. The dead tissue began to regenerate. Circulation returned. Bone fragments began to fuse. Even the nerves, which were believed to be irreparable, started to come alive again.

Within months, the leg that had been declared lost was well on its way to rebuilding itself.

“Sometimes I would feel currents of light moving through me,” Mitchell later said.
“The pain would dissolve, and I knew something much larger than myself was at work.”

The Impossible Healing

Over the next year, Mitchell’s recovery became something of a phenomenon. His body, against all medical prediction, healed completely. The leg that had shattered beyond repair became whole and functional. The doctors, who had documented every stage of his injury, could only describe the outcome as medically unexplainable.

But for Mitchell, it was not a mystery — it was a revelation.

He had experienced firsthand that the life force — chi, prana, bioenergy, whatever name one gives it — is real and profoundly intelligent. The body is not simply matter; it is vibration, light, and awareness. When that awareness is aligned with love, intention, and presence, healing can unfold in ways that defy explanation.

From Healed to Healer

After his recovery, Mitchell devoted his life to understanding what had happened to him. He studied physics, psychology, and subtle energy systems. Exploring the electromagnetic and quantum fields of the human body became his passion and his purpose. He began to teach others what he had learned:  that healing is not just physical — it is vibrational, emotional, and spiritual.

In time, Mitchell May became known as a pioneer of energy medicine. His research and practice emphasized the power of coherence — the state in which the body, mind, and energy field operate in harmony. He demonstrated that this state could be cultivated through meditation, nutrition, intention, and conscious energy work.

Eventually, Mitchell founded The Synergy Company, where he channeled his understanding of energy into creating exceptionally nourishing and high-vibrational nutritional formulas. His company’s mission was simple yet profound:  to help people awaken the body’s natural capacity for renewal by supporting it on every level — physical, energetic, and spiritual.

The Power of Energy Healing

Mitchell May’s story is not only a tale of survival; it is a testament to the extraordinary potential within all of us. It shows that healing is not something done to us, but something awakened within us.

Modern medicine treats the body as a machine — but energy healing views it as a symphony of light and frequency. When we engage that symphony through awareness, love, and intention, we become participants in our own regeneration.

Energy healing does not oppose science — it expands it. It reminds us that behind every heartbeat, every spark of nerve activity, and every cell division is a pulse of life and intelligence far greater than chemistry. It is the same pulse that moves the stars, grows a forest, and heals a broken bone.

Mitchell’s journey reminds us that we are not separate from that power — we are made of it.

A Legacy of Light

Today, decades after his accident, Mitchell May continues to inspire people across the world. His story is a living example of what is possible when energy aligns with intention.

“Healing is not about fighting disease.
It’s about restoring the flow of life where it was once forgotten.”
— Mitchell May

And perhaps that is the heart of it all: to remember the light that we are — to allow energy, love, and awareness to move freely again through every part of our being.

Because when that flow returns, miracles no longer seem unlikely.
They simply become the way life works.
